Cable Stalemate Ends, Breather for Behala Viewers

Finally, cable television viewers in Behala and adjoining areas have more choice. Srishti Cable TV Network, a consortium of 120-odd cablemen, became the fourth multi-services operator in the area after broadcasters Star India and Sony offered them feed late on Tuesday.

Other broadcasters, including ESPN-StarSports and Zee, are expected to follow suit.

Srishti Cable was to turn into an MSO on December 31 when conditional access system was rolled out in Behala, Thakurpurkur, Alipore, Kidderpore, Metiabruz and other areas west of the Tolly Nullah.
But lack of preparedness forced it to keep the MSO aspirations in abeyance. Though it managed to put its act together in a month, rival MSOs put pressure on broadcasters to refuse signals.

The three-month-long wait to join the MSO bandwagon finally ended on Tuesday night after the nodal officer for implementing CAS in Kolkata, Abhijit Sanyal, asked broadcasters to comply with TRAI directive.

Sanyal had summoned the broadcasters to a meeting at Writers' on Monday and asked them to reconnect signals that had been snapped on January 2."Broadcasters are bound by TRAI guidelines to provide unrestricted feed to all MSO licence holders. Since Srishti Cable is a bonafide licence holder, it is also entitled to signals," an official from state information & cultural affairs department said.

With over 60% of cable TV market in Behala, Kidderpore and Thakurpukur controlled by operators who form the Srishti Cable consortium, the latter hopes to make rapid strides to reclaim markets lost to rival MSOs SitiCable and CableComm. Manthan, the third MSO, does not have a significant presence in the area.

"Till now, less than 20% of former cable households in zone one have opted for CAS . The rest are either viewing free-to-air channels or given up cable television altogether. We will tap them through intense door-to-door marketing activity," said Raj Narayan Roy Chowdhury, a key functionary at Srishti Cable.
