Jadavpur University Students to Assess TeachersBy sachiv1, Section Education
Jadavpur University teachers will soon be answerable for coming ill-prepared for a lecture. None other than students will mark them for their slackness. The executive council of JU will pass an order to this effect on April 4, making teachers' appraisal by students compulsory from the 2007 session.
A model questionnaire has been prepared on the basis of which students will appraise teachers several times every semester. The questionnaire will also be placed before the EC for approval. Though the UGC and the AICTE had earlier advised JU to introduce this appraisal system, the matter had always been shelved due to teachers' resistance. "The EC might suggest some modifications in our modus operandi. We will incorporate them," said EC member, Partha Pratim Biswas. The questionnaire will be divided into two parts -- teaching methodology and subject relevance. Each part will be divided into five sub parts with consisting a wide range of questions.
In the teaching methodology section, a teacher will be assessed on the quality of his lectures, on whether he completes his syllabus, clarity of his presentation and on whether a student has gained by attending his classes. In the subject relevance section, students will be asked whether the load is too heavy, whether the syllabus is in correlation with the field, whether text books, etc.
"Each teacher will be given copies of the questionnaire which they have to get the students to fill up. However, students need not fear giving candid feedback as they are not required to write their name. Besides, they only need to tick on the right answer in the questionnaire. This way his handwriting too does not give away his identity," Biswas added. At the end of the semester, the questionnaire sheets will be handed over to the dean who, after proper scanning, will decide if any teacher's performance needs review. Students are happy. They feel that this will finally prevent teachers from bunking classes and reading out the same hackneyed notes. They will now try to add value to their lectures by updating themselves.
