Nandigram has failed its children: Most schools closed; those open, have a different story
Priyanka Das Adhikary, a Class IX student of Kalicharanpur Doyamoyee High School topped her class last year. This year, she does not know if she will be able to continue her studies. Priyanka is one of the hundreds of students who have not been to school for over two months. She's been spending her days in a relief camp in Tekhali market. Biswajit Mondol (10) is a student of Atmamoyee Primary School in Keshabpur. He went to school last in December. Anuradha (7), Biswajit's sister and a student of Class II at the same school, is too young to realise why they have to stay in the camp. Milan Mondol (10), has last gone to school -- Gokulnagar Gobindo Jiur Primary School -- on January 3. His parents Punnita and Dipak are agricultural labourers, having 2 bighas of land. The issue of land acquisition has affected the studies of 24,860 primary and Sishu Siksha Kendra students in entire Nandigram block. Mid-day meals have stopped in many places since the beginning of January, when the trouble began. The district administration admits that nearly 500 quintals of rice meant for mid-day meals in 122 primary schools and 74 Sishu Siksha Kendras (SSK)in Nandigram Block is untraced. Presumably, the stocks had been looted and consumed by agitators for and against land acquisition. The worst hit are Sonachura, Kendamari, Kalicharanpur and Gukulnagar, where over 10,126 students have been worst hit, with over 200 quintals of grains having been looted every month since Januaray.
"We have got reports that in the present chaos, the rice meant for mid-day meal scheme is being looted," said Ashok Kumar Sarkar, Block Development Officer of Nandigram. Parents are scared to send their children to schools which have opened. Others are closed. A large number of children are also in refugee camps at the border of Nandigram and Khejuri. Those schools which opened are not able to provide the mid-day meal, he said. Worse, "the Gram Panchayat offices are burnt. There is still no police or administration in Nandigram, especially these areas. So we are unable to help", Sarkar added.
The Newsline team visited four camps for displaced families in Tekhali Bazar, Sherkachowk and Bhangabera areas as well as the affected areas of Sonachura, Kendamari and others in Nandigram. "Everything was perfect till December and I attended school regularly. But in January when the trouble started, my parents left our village and we shifted to Tekhali Bazar. I have heard that our house had been ransacked and my books destroyed. I scored the highest in my class and expected to do well in the annual exam," said Priyanka, a resident of Gokulnagar. In Gangra, at Basulibor primary school, under Sonachura Gram Panchayat, a lone teacher was seen in a class of seven girl students. In normal times, the class strength is 150. The school is four kilometers from Bhangabera, where police clashed with the villagers on March 14. The teacher, Tapan Kumar Jana, said: "No parent dares to send children to school which opened two days ago. The annual exams in February could not be conducted... Rice in our godown for mid-day meal is looted. There is no food to give to the children." Neither of the two camps were eager to take responsibility for the state of affairs. "We are trying our best to restore normalcy in the schools," said Sishir Adhikary of Bhumi Ucched Birodhi Committee, "but there is fear in the air which is forcing students to stay home." Ashok Guria, CPI(M) district secretariat member said: "The TMC and others have driven out 2000 party supporters out of their homes. How can the children go to school? There is no administration here." Source- http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=229186
