PWD on Raj-era Statue Hunt To Retrieve & Preserve Lost LandmarksBy sachiv1, Section Events
Colonial era statues that had once adorned major city thoroughfares, are to be retrieved and preserved. Removed in the face of Naxalite violence in the late 60s and early 70s, these statues of viceroys and governor-generals used to stand tall in the Maidan, College Street and Esplanade.
HERITAGE HUNT Prodded by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi who has written a book on these statues who sought details of their whereabouts, Kolkata Municipal Corporation gave Raj Bhavan a preliminary report. KMC, though, only sent an initial report to the Governor. It then passed the buck to the state public works department on the ground that the statues belonged to the department after. “The PWD will be looking into the issue,” said mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. PWD has now begun a survey to locate the statues.
There were 31 of them. “Most of them dated back to the British raj and were dumped during the naxalite movement in the late 60s,” said a PWD official. Historical objects including statues, artefact, jewellery and other articles are mostly preserved at the Victoria Memorial.
The government managed to recover most of the statues. They are now located at Latbagan while some are preserved at Victoria Memorial and other museums. “Of the 31 statues, 13 have been identified. They are at Latbagan,” said an official. Officials said that about seven statues are missing. “Two of them have been taken abroad. We will have to find the whereabouts of the remaining five. Surveys will be conducted in several parts of the city for this purpose,” said an official. PWD minister Kshiti Goswami, said the department had earlier planned a statue park on the Maidan. But the proposal was turned down by the Defence Ministry. (Source-Times Of India,29/03/07)
