The minister for urban development, Asok Bhattacharya, said, "If the Central government sanctions the amount, new flyovers will enhance connectivity and also initiate development in a way."
"People should cooperate with the government and I promise the displaced will be rehabilitated in time because of land acquistion for the construction of flyovers," said Bhattacharya while inaugurating the road connecting Prince Anwar Shah Road to E MBypass. Several flyovers are planned connecting various parts of the city one from Park Circus to Parama island, another at Dunlop junction (Rs 80 crore), the one at Vivekananda Road (Rs 150 crore), which will be an exit ramp, and additional flyovers at Baghajotin and Prince Anwar Shah Road, E M Bypass to Kamalgaji.
"However, a sum of Rs 330 crore will also be spent in connecting Park Circus to the area near ITC Sonar Bangla," the minister added. There is more on the state's platter, Rs 2400 crore, which is meant for the improvement of its sewerage and drainage systems. This will also include slum development, housing for the poverty-stricken, solid waste management and also ensure safe drinking water.
Kanti Ganguly, state minister for Sunderban development, said, "A road connecting Sonarpur to Raichak and a second brigade parade ground is the need of the hour." The proceedings were, however, interrupted when a middle-aged woman took the stage and said the authorities had not rehabilitated her. However, Ganguly assured her he would look into the matter. The Prince Anwar Shah Road connector was conceived in the 90s and it took almost a decade for its completion. This connector will also facilitate the people of Behala and Tollygunge. The sum spent on this project in the first phase is around Rs 30 crore and with time this road will become a six-lane carriageway. Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya urged the people to keep the roads clean and to "support the initiative taken for the development of Kolkata." (Source-Indian Express,02/03/07)
