State to Run 500 Special Buses for Book FairBy sachiv1, Section Transportation
The state government will run 500 special buses for the upcoming Kolkata Book Fair at Salt Lake.
State transport minister Subhas Chakraborty has said that the special buses will ply between 1pm and 10 pm daily during the fair. The buses will connect prominent localities with the fair venue. They will be available at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes. "Same fair will be charged for all the routes," said Chakraborty. For the visitors the transport department has also announced prizes for which winners will be chosen through a daily lottery. Each ticket will have a counterpart that will be collected at the fair gate. Out of these pieces, two daily and three on Sundays will be picked. The winners will be able to travel free of cost on local state buses for a year.
Chakraborty said that the fair will not disturb a game at the stadium scheduled to take place on 14 February. The minister has said that given the circumstances, after the High Court's order, the fair is being organised at Salt Lake and it is expected that it will draw crowds as it did during the previous years.
A committee, comprising representatives of concerned officials, has been formed to oversee that the fair is organised properly. Responding to a query on a split among the publishers, the minister said that he is not in favour of a split yet if some section is interested in organising a separate fair, it can do so. The work on construction of stalls at the fair site will commence only after the existing stalls the remains of the industrial India trade fair are removed from the site. With the current situation, it has become difficult for the organisers to start the fair on the proposed date. (Source-Indian Express,06/02/07
