Elevated Carriageway Along Periphery on AnvilBy sachiv1, Section Transportation
The state government has planned a four-lane, elevated carriageway along the city's periphery to ease traffic congestion.
The government is in talks with a Malaysian company for this Rs 5,000-crore project. The Japanese are next in line and will be involved in several other projects to spruce up the transport network in Kolkata. Transport secretary Sumantra Chowdhury said, "We are examining this proposal. The carriageway will be 45 kilometres long and will circle the city." He was addressing a seminar organised by the Ministry of Railways, the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) and Japan Overseas Rolling Stock association (JORSA). "The transport system in Kolkata is complex and confusing," he said. "Flyovers in Kolkata have not helped because they shift congestion from one point to another. There is an urgent need for a coordinated approach if we wish to attain vision 2025 for the city's infrastructure."
"The proposed project," he said, "is estimated to carry four to five lakh people every day. It will be executed by a Malayasian company on build-operate-transfer basis."
The proposed carriageway, with an average height of 5.5 meters from the ground, will be linked with the Dedicated Freight Corridor. Unlike other flyovers, it will have multiple points of entry. The government also has two pending projects. An elevated, rail-based mass transit system will be built on a public-private partnership basis, where 35 per cent of the cost will be borne by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), 15 per cent by the state and the rest by private operators. Another rail transit system from Ramrajatala in Howrah to Salt Lake and from Salt Lake to Rajarhat is also being pursued. Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) officials will come for an inspection later this month. (Source-Indian Express,17/02/07)
