Nod to Book Fair ExtensionBy sachiv1, Section Events
Ticket Sales Start Today; Rush To Clean Up Fair Ground
After a lot of dithering and dilly-dallying, Publishers and Booksellers Guild has finally got the jinxed 32nd Kolkata Book Fair extended till February 25. Ticket sales, which missed two deadlines, will now start on Thursday. Announcing this on Wednesday, guild secretary Tridib Chattopadhyay said the necessary clearances have been secured for the extension. The organisers also promised that they would make sure the fair is as successful as the previous ones if the weather holds. "We have been considering extending the fair for some time. It has been cleared by the agencies concerned and the fair will now continue till February 25," said Chattopadhyay. Free entry to Boi Mela ended on Wednesday. From Thursday, you have to buy a ticket to enter the fair ground which has been left muddied by the unseasonal rain.
Publishers were delighted with the announcement of the fair extension. They are hoping that the extra days will help attract visitors, enhance sales and make up for the lost time. "The rain and the delayed construction work had almost ruined the show. But the extension is welcome. It should have been announced earlier," said Diptangshu Mondol of Deep Prakashan.
After a rain-marred beginning, the fair finally got off to a faltering start on Wednesday. More than 80% of the stalls are now ready. The rest are expected to be in place by Thursday afternoon. Construction work will continue through the night to meet the deadline. "Unless there is more rain, we hope to have a full-fledged book fair from Thursday. Work remains to be done but that won't come in the way of the fair," said guild official Anil Acharya. Water, mud and debris were cleared from the fair ground throughout the day. As many as 20 truckloads of sand were sprinkled to dry the waterlogged lanes. "The drying operation has been successful. Today, we had the highest number of visitors till now. We are expecting a good turnout from tomorrow," added Acharya. Fair tickets will be sold at the ground and from the Howrah, Sealdah and Ultadanga stations. They will also be available at 22 branches of the United Bank of India across the city. (Source-Times Of India,15/02/07)
