Indonesian Group Plans 2008 Entry for Arjun MotorcyclesBy sachiv1, Section News
The construction of Salim Group's Mahabharat motorcycle factory will start in June this year and the motorcycle called "Arjun" will hit the streets by the end of next year.
The Indonesian company, which has made two prototypes of the bike, gave a presentation on the status of the project to state minister for commerce and industries Nirupam Sen and other senior officials of the department on Wednesday. "The motorcycle is being designed and we plan to hit the streets by the end of next year with about 5 lakh motorcycles," Prasun Mukherjee, a partner in the Salim Group's India operations, said after the presentations. The foundation of the factory was laid 11 months ago. Explaining the delay, Mukherjee said they were not just putting an assembly line with an investment of Rs 20 crore, but it was an entire manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. "Such projects need time," he said.
Meanwhile, Nirupam Sen said that work on all SEZs will start only when the government acquires the land and hands it over to the industrialists. "The clock will rotate only when we hand over the land. And, as you are aware, the chief minister has already said that we will move ahead only after we get the consent of the people. In Singur, there is not much of a problem now. In places like Nandigram, we will go ahead only after taking the people into confidence," Sen said.
Apart from the motorbike factory, the Salim Group is setting up two SEZs at Haldia and Nandigram. It is also building a road between Barasat in North 24-Parganas and Raichak in South 24-Parganas, and a bridge between Kookrahati at Haldia and Raichak. (Source-Indian Express,15/02/07)
