The Indian Apprentice Engineers of Kanchrapara Workshop celebrated their platinum jubilee yesterday and today. Among the few alumni institutions, the Indian Apprentice Engineers of Kanchrapara has kept its banner flying for 75 years.
Few leading stalwarts such as Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Madan Mohan Malaviya raised an important issue in the legislative Assembly of the involvement of citizens of Indian origin in the industrial development of the nation which led to the formation of a series of committees. According to the recommendation of one such panel, Kanchrapara Technical School was sanctioned in 1919, following an agreement between the then Bengal government and the Railway board.
The Kanchrapara Technical School was started in 1922 under the dual control of the Bengal government and the Eastern Bengal Railway to train apprentices for the Railways as well as other engineering establishments in India. The annual re-union celebrations of Indian Apprentices was started in 1926.
Apart from octogenarians and septuagenarians, young apprentices and their families took part in programmes at the old premises. The two-day programme included sports, cultural activities and a spectacular fire display.
