No Respite For Students As Pool Cars Stay Off RoadBy Dr arvind, Section Civic Problems in Kolkata
Pool cars in Kolkata went off the road on Thursday to protest against harassment at the hands of motor vehicles inspectors, leaving students in the lurch.
At Mahadevi Birla Girls Higher Secondary School, the gates remained open an additional 30 minutes even after classes had started. "There were children coming from distant places. Their parents had skipped office to bring their kids to school," said Malini Bhagat, principal of the school. Home secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said, "The government is concerned about the menace. Police have been asked to keep a strict vigil on pool car operations so that they are driven safely." Meghna Dasgupta, mother of a Class V student at Birla High School, had to skip office to accompany her child to school and take him back home. "I stay at Beliaghata and my office is near my home. But, the child had to be brought to school as there are only a few days left before the Christmas vacations," Dasgupta said. Click on "Full Story" for more...
About 3,000 pool cars have been taken off the road by the pool-car owners welfare association. "I have met the authorities and asked why those cars with permits were also harassed by the raiding officials. They asked me to meet the PVD director. A meeting will be arranged on Monday. I will also send letters," said the secretary of the association.
As most schools will shut by Monday, parents can breathe a sigh of relief. Schools like South Point, where a sizeable chunk of students depend on pool cars to come to school, have shut down. Some CBSE schools are still open, but they, too, will close from Friday. "There is little chance of the pool car strike continuing after the winter vacations. Hopefully things should be sorted out by then. Else, it will create trouble for parents, especially those who work," said Sutapa Mazumdar, mother of a Class V Don Bosco student. From: TOI, Dec-21-07
