Science Express To Roll Into Kolkata In FebBy siddharth22, Section News
The `Science Express', the exhibition train flagged off by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and German chancellor Angela Merkel, would be rolling into Kolkata in February next year.
The train, showcasing cutting edge technology from Germany and India, is slated to travel across 57 cities. It would be open to public viewing during its entire stay in Howrah from February 7 to 11, 2008. Hans Henning BlomeyerBartenstein, director general of Asian and Pacific Affairs, federal foreign office of the government of Ger many, said the other important aim of this train would be to highlight avenues for Indo-German cooperation in the fields of science and technology. Blomeyer Bartenstein was addressing the members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in the city along with Gudrun Sraega, director for South Asian affairs, government of Germany. The director general, who came to Kolkata from Hyderabad and would be flying to New Delhi tomorrow, also met the chief secretary of the West Bengal government Amit Kiran Deb. "We discussed potential avenues of investment in the state which included clean and renewable energy, infrastructure among others," Blomeyer-Bartenstein said. During his interaction with the ICC members he said he was very impressed with the intensity of activity in Kolkata.
"This is a very vibrant and dynamic city is the message that I am going to carry back home with me," he said.
Later he told to reporters that what he saw in Kolkata by far surpassed his expectations. He highlighted the significance of Kolkata's geographic location, saying that a lot of German firms would be interested in collaborating for infrastructure development pro grammes in the region. "Kolkata has an important, strategic location and can serve as a gateway to East and Southeast Asia. It would play an important role for closer cooperation and integration. If there are any tenders for infrastructure projects in the state then you would find German companies actively participating in them," he said. He said the Asian region had acquired a "global face" and any development in this part of the world would have a resonance in other parts including America and Europe. "We see this as a challenge for Germany and an opportunity to engage with partners like India in a mutually beneficial relationship," said BlomeyerBartenstein. He however, said that despite several common interests, New Delhi and Berlin had differences, especially with respect to the issue of nuclear energy. "While Germany is trying to get out of it, India is trying to get in," he said, adding that Germany treated the deal as one between two democratic countries, but would nevertheless monitor closely the agreements that India would make with the IAEA. "Germany has some views regarding nuclear proliferation which are well known," he said. Source:The Indian Express,06-11-07
