London Varsity Eyes Courses In kolkata

Here is good news for students of eastern India. University of London (UOL) is soon going start some of its courses closer home. For those, who have been dreaming of studying at UOL but could not afford to go all the way there, this would be a dream come true.

Aditya Academy, a CBSE affiliated school of the Aditya Group in Barasat on the northern fringes of the city, is going to be the address where UOL courses will be conducted.

To start with, bachelor degree courses in business administration, computing and information systems and various management courses are on the anvil. UOL will be providing the study materials and online web resources apart from facilitating interaction between the faculties of Aditya Academy and the University of London.

"Once the course begins, students, who always wished to study there but did not have the means to do so, can avail of courses at a much lower cost," said Susan Gidman, UOL international development adviser.

A team from UOL, including Gidman and Brinda Rai, director for external students on computing programmes and head of media and public relations, visited the Aditya Academy in Barasat on Wednesday. The team interacted with representatives from the Aditya Group and discussed ways and means of launching the various courses.

In the current scenario, a student has to shell out nearly 12,000 pounds per annum as course fee at UOL and an equal amount for living and other expenses. Though the cost of the courses at the Barasat centre are yet to be decided, it will not be more than 3,000 pounds per annum.

"Barring students who passed out from the Aditya Academy, we have plans of throwing open the course to other students as well in the near future. We hope we can cater to the whole of the eastern region as well as our neighbouring countries," said Nirmal Bose, chief secretary of the Aditya Group.

Of the 200 UOL study centres across the globe, only two are in India, so far. These are in Mumbai and Delhi. Kolkata will be the third city with an UOL study centre.

"If everything goes off well, there is a fair chance of the course starting from the next academic session. The quality of education will be monitored closely. If the venture takes off successfully, we might consider expanding the number of courses," said Gidman.
