At No Parking Zones, Park Your Vehicle For A Fee

Though the areas around New Market and Parkomat in Lindsay Street were declared no parking zones last year, you can still park your vehicles there.

For a fee, at the several illegal parking lots.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has refused to look into the problem and has blamed the Kolkata Traffic Department for the mismanagement.

"The civic body is no longer responsible for the illegal parking lots. We have handed over the charge to Kolkata Traffic police department in September. They will look into the matter from now on.

We are not collecting any fee," said the assistant manager of the car parking department of KMC, Biswajit Mitra.

However, the deputy commissioner of traffic, Manoj Verma, said: "The civic body's role in the entire car parking system is full of loopholes. Why did they stop us from prosecuting cars in the New Market area in the first week of September? Officials from the traffic department had gone to penalise vehicles parked around New Market on September 1. The KMC had asked our officials not to do so."

The concerned area has been declared a no parking zone from September 1. This, however, has failed to change the parking scene even after one and a half months.

Pioneer Fee Car Parking Society runs six parking lots in Lindsay Street and the Humayun Court area.

The registration for these lots were cancelled at the end of September. The decision in this regard was taken by Municipal Commissioner Alapan Bandapadhyay in the same month.

However, Simplex, which has developed the Simpark project along with Kolkata Municipal Corporation, finds no change due to the handover.

"Be it Kolkata Traffic department or the civic body, it will be difficult to shift the fee parking lots from the area. The operators of these parking lots are powerful enough to ignore the police and the civic body," said one of the managers of Simplex.
