Computer Literacy Courses Launched For Rural SchoolsBy siddharth22, Section Education
The West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) is all set to introduce a community outreach computer project for students in the farflung rural schools along with the engineering colleges in the districts.
The aim is to disseminate the computer knowledge in all corners of the state. The university has taken up its project along with the BC Roy Engineering College in Durgapur at a local school with about 500 students. The WBUT will give four P3 terminals with a P4 server on November 15 to Bijra High School in Durgapur. The cost will be incurred by the university. The technology operation on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) will run on linux systems and the entire computing will be made available to the students in Bengali. The technology for this has been provided to the university by Localised Low Cost Computing, L2C2 technologies. The university have named the initiative as Nije Shekho (Learn By Yourself) and efforts are on to make the students capable so that they can use the system on their own. "Since past few months, the students of B C Roy Engineering College have voluntarily pooled in some money and were teaching the students of Bijra High School before the university could come up with anything concrete," said Indranil Das Gupta, Chief Technology Architect of L2C2 technology. "We hope more colleges will be involved in such projects as a part of social service initiative. We hope to take this programme to all the districts in the state," said Vice Chancellor Ashok Ranjan Thakur. The expenses involved in this process can be borne by the university, the engineering colleges, voluntary organisations and even corporates as a part of their corporate social responsibility, Thakur added.
