Mollah Slams Govt Over Leather WoesBy siddharth22, Section News
Land and land reforms minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah on Thursday slammed the state government over its lack of concern for the leather industry. He also lashed out at the latter for siphoning off 130 acres of Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC) land at Bantala and allot it to the IT sector.
"Why does the state only talk about Jindal, Balaji and Tata Motors? When they will come? We have to address the problems plaguing the leather industry as it will generate employment for many," said Mollah. At the skill development programme for leather production, organised by Indian Leather Product Association (ILPA), Central Leather Research Institute and the Banghar Unnayan Samiti, he said: "Contrary to the state's claim, more land is required for the leather complex." CLC was initially allotted 1,100 acres. ILPA, along with the state, plans to set up a training institute at its leather goods park, coming up at CLC. It will train 1,000 people over to manufacture leather goods. "We will ask Jagmohan Dalmiya to donate 10 cottah and the remaining 10 cottah will be purchased by West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation," said Mollah. Although he ruled out problems with land acquisition, as a rehabilitation cum compensation package is in place, he was not sure about the timeline for the land map to be ready. Members of the industry will meet a parliamentary committee on Saturday to discuss the prospects of the industry. Source:The Times Of India,02-11-07
