Now, MMTC plans a jewellery SEZ, 60-acre plot and has short-listed some states, including BengalBy Unregistered Visitors, Section News
MMTC Ltd plans to set up a jewellery SEZ on a 60-acre plot and has short-listed some states, including Bengal, as a possible location.
MMTC chief general manager Asheesh Majumdar said PwC has been appointed to draw up a roadmap for the SEZ initiative. PwC will submit its report by December. MMTC general manager (east) P K Das said Bengal could be an ideal location for the SEZ because most of the gold artisans are based here. "We will get cheap manpower if we set up the SEZ here," he said. A private partner could be roped in for the SEZ, he added. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Orissa are also being considered as probable locations. "We have already spoken to West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) for the SEZ. It is keen to join hands. The state agency will bring in land as equity, MMTC's contribution would be its expertise in the raw material and the private partner will bring in its expertise in design," Das said. Das said MMTC is also setting up a hallmarking and assaying facility at Manikanchan, an existing gem and jewellery SEZ in Kolkata. "The 1,200 sq ft hallmarking facility will be functional by the end of this month and will hallmark 2 lakh items every year," he added. TNN
