Puja Pandal To Resemble Luxor Temple Of EgyptBy pardeep3dec, Section Durga Puja
This pujas, Kolkatans can have a glimpse of the 3,000 year old Luxor Temple of Egypt at a central Kolkata puja. The artisans of Kumartuli and Government Art College alumni together are creating the Egyptian model of Durga and setting up a pandal with the likeliness of 3,000-year-old Luxor temple.
"The Egyptian theme seems to be a big hit. Various puja pandals have experimented with it. But we are the pioneers to introduce Durga Puja idols inspired by the Egyptian look," said Kalyan Gupta, who conceived the idea for the puja in the Ladies Park. Artistes Chanchal Ahmed and Srisovan Dutta, exstudents of the Government Art College, will be designing the goddess. "Theme pujas are a major hit this year. It was a nice experience to create the goddess in a new model. But the problem was finding an equivalent of Ganesha. But later on we found an equivalent of Ganesha," said Ahmed. Renowned Kumartuli artisan Swapan Pal has also extended his full support to Ahmed and Dutta. Bamboo or wood will not be used for erecting the structure of the pandals, Ahmed said. Instead of using the usual elements for erecting a pandal, the Puja committee will make use of iron scaffoldings to support the pandals. To reflect the ambience of an age old temple, vast canvas comprising pictorial depictions of Egyptian mythologies will be portrayed on the eight columns made of plywood inside the pandal.
