Nine members of the Estimates Committee of Parliament on Tuesday met the representatives of Calcutta University and Jadavpur University to ascertain their response to the recommendations of the Knowledge Commission.
UGC has deemed both the universities centres of excellence. The Commission had in November 2006 come up with a series of recommendations that would bring about structural and financial changes in many universities. It also wanted a separate body to be set up to decide on the academic affairs of universities. The varsities would be made more self reliant by reducing funding from the UGC.
Samik Lahiri, an MP from the state who is a member of the committee, said CU and JU have agreed to some of the recommendations. The committee will consult about 30 universities and centres of higher education, including the IITs and IIIMs.
Prior to this, the committee had sent a questionnaire to the universities and asked for their view on several issues.
