This festive season, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board and the state environment department will conduct a survey of eco friendly Durga Pujas.
The idea is to check which puja follows environment norms best, like keeping noise levels within permissible limits, following fire safety rules, not using banned plastic bags and maintaining a hygienic milieu.
"We will conduct thorough checks as one needs to be aware of the importance of an environment friendly puja," said M L Meena, state environment secretary, on Tuesday.
"Awareness among small organisers will develop once the big organisers start following the norms," said a senior state environment department official. So, a survey will be conducted on 30 top draws of Kolkata. Those would be judged on the basis of environment, public health and safety.
Organisers are expected to maintain a decent volume of the loudspeaker, keep pandals free of plastic carry bags, have first aid boxes and drinking water available and follow fire safety and security rules, among other norms.
