Residents Block Road To Protest Inundation Against Kolkata Municipal Corporation

Residents of Garia, Naktala and Bansdroni blocked NSC Bose Road on Monday to protest the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's failure to prevent the inundation of the areas during high tide every day. This prompted KMC to finally send portable pumps to drain out tide water from the worst-hit stretches in Bansdroni.

KMC officials had earlier thrown up their hands saying that the civic body would not be able to resolve the problem. Left with little option, angry local residents took to the streets.

Swapna Bose, a resident of Bramhapur in Bansdroni, said: "None of us can leave home due to waterlogging. The civic administration has made no effort to drain out water that has come rushing in due to the high tide." Kajol De's kids in nearby Sonali Park have not been able to go to school for the same period.

Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya on Monday made it clear that KMC could do little apart from instaling portable pumps as high tide was causing the inundation. "We have installed pumps for draining out tide water following demands from a section of local residents," the mayor said.
