A college offering three year degree courses in biotechnology and biochemistry was opened in Pursurah, Hooghly on Friday. A joint initiative of Burdwan University and IILM Academy of Higher Learning at Noida, the Vidyasagar Institute of Education, Technology and Research was inaugurated by state higher education minister Sudarshan Roychowdhury on Thursday.
Recalling his efforts to set up a technical institute at Pursurah, local MP Anil Basu said Pursurah panchayat samiti had set up a commercial building, for which he had released Rs 50 lakh from his MPLAD fund. "But the project was not viable. Later, we contacted IILM," he said, adding that IILM would also set up a research institute in New Town.
The government would also set up an engineering college. In his inaugural address, Roychowdhury said there aren't enough institutions in the state to meet the demand for biotechnology and biochemistry courses. IILM director D K Biswas said his organisation is interested in opening more such institutes in the state.
