The Gitanjali group will start its first training institute at the Greenfield SEZ in Salt Lake's Sector V by January 2008. It intends to start manufacture and production at Manikanchan in the next three months and set up new SEZs in Kalyani and Rajarhat.
"We will build a 4,000 sq ft institute in Manikanchan to train people in cutting, polishing and manufacturing diamond jewellery," said Dharmesh Bothra, Gitanjali's chief operating officer (jewellery).
K S Bagchi, managing director, Bengal Peerless Housing Development Co. Ltd, said: "Ninety per cent of the jewellery are manufactured in Bengal. The SEZ will help generate employment in Bengal." To start with, the company will employ 2,000 local people. "We will use state of the art technology," Bothra said.
The proposed 50 to 100 acre SEZ in New Town will come up with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. The company is also acquiring land for its six proposed SEZs in Panwel, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Nasik, Hyderabad and Kolkata. These will come up on a total investment of Rs 1,000 crore in the next couple of years.
