A solution to solve the city's garbage problem seems to be sight. Two foreign firms have approached Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to set up a plant to generate electricity from garbage at the Dhapa dumping ground.

Representatives of a Swiss and a German firm submitted the proposal to mayor Bikash Bhattacharya on Friday The latter said the com nies wanted to set up t plant as a joint ventu "It is quite hearteni for us since we hav been struggling to dump garbage, which is on the rise. We will go through their proposals and take steps accordingly," Bhattacharya said.

According to sources in KMC's solid waste management department, the city generates more than 3,000 tonne garbage a day, a quantity that is rapidly increasing. Desperate to find a place for extra garbage, the civic body recently started talks with a fertiliser firm to reopen the compost plant at Dhapa that has been lying idle for the past few years due to a tussle between KMC and the firm, a senior KMC official said.

According to KMC conservancy department officials, as the construction of the land fill site adjacent to the present dumping ground is being delayed due to land acquisition

problems, there is an urgent need to recycle he additional garbage erated, thanks to the ing boom in the city. The present dumping und at Dhapa can no er take the burden of extra garbage as it has outlived its utility. We need to use the garbage for the electricity project to avoid disasters in the near future," said a KMC official.

KMC has been asked to close the present dumping ground and construct a new landfill site at the earliest. The present dumping ground was set up in the mid 80s with a longevity of 20 years.
