Model Hospitals Flunk Quality Test,Healthcare Body Says Fab Four Lag Behind In InfrastructureBy siddharth22, Section News
The slew of private hospitals setting up shop in the city might point to a healthcare boom, but when it comes to quality service, the sector falls way short of standards. According to the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), four of the leading private hospitals in Kolkata are woefully short of "infrastructural facilities, lack work culture and are even flouting safety norms".
NABH, a constituent board under the Quality Council of India, has been set up to monitor healthcare standards and to set benchmarks for progress for the industry. The question mark on services hangs over Ruby Hospital, RN Tagore International Institute for Cardiac Sciences, AMRI and Woodlands Hospital. All four have been asked to pull up their socks to meet the desired standards set by the board. That's because all four have failed a pre assessment test conducted by a two member NABH team recently. The hospitals can't seek accreditation unless they pass the test and qualify for an assessment that will grade them. "Unfortunately, none of the hospitals that had applied for accreditation could meet the requirements. In fact, some fell short on safety measures which could be dangerous. They have been asked to take measures," said a member of the NABH assessment committee. The hospitals, however, refused to read much into the accreditation system. NABH doesn't assess hospitals on their clinical efficiency, they pointed out. "An accreditation doesn't reflect on the medical and surgical standards of the institution. In any case, we have cleared the first stage and will apply for the final assessment once we are through with our expansion work," said Dr Kunal Sarkar, director of RN Tagore.
Woodlands CEO Sumedha Sen said the hospital is now making the "required additions" suggested by the NABH and will apply for the final inspection by December. Ruby Hospital is not yet ready to complete the accreditation process, said CEO SB Purakayastha. AMRI, Salt Lake, too is busy making "additions and alterations" to meet the requirements. "We hope to be able to complete it by early 2008," said CEO Dr TS Kukreja.
The inspection team found the Kolkata hospitals lacking more in work culture than in terms of infrastructure. Delivery of service was slow compared to international standards and there "was room for improvement in the quality of the service delivered". At least two of them did not have the required distance between beds while one had an oxygen tank stationed close to the canteen. Infection rate was also higher than normal. The hospitals have been asked to improve the facilities and re-apply for assessment after six months. Applicants are assessed on the basis of 100 standards and 503 objective elements. The idea is to focus on patient and staff safety and ensure that set standards are adhered to. Source:The Times Of India,30-10-07
