City To House New Airline,Kolkata Will Soon Be The Headquarters For An AirwaysBy siddharth22, Section Development
The much hyped Bengal Air, the proposed exclusive airline for the state, never took off. But the city will soon be the headquarters for an airways.
Zav Airways, floated by a group of non-resident Indians, will start operation from Kolkata on March 22. The airline will fly to the North-East and other tier-II cities.
Zav chairman Kishor Zavery told TOI that they are planning to invest Rs 6,000 crore in Zaveri added that the airline has already got the NOC from the civil aviation ministry and the company will soon take up the matter with the chief minister. In the first phase, the company is planning to start air taxi services in various district towns of the state and in the North-East. It will buy four helicopters for the air taxi service. "Our plan is to promote tourism in this part of the country through the air taxi service. The helicopters can be used for trips to destinations like Malda, Balurghat, Darjeeling and Gangtok that have small air strips," he said.
Elaborating on the plan, Zaveri said the ATR service is likely to be introduced from March 22. "Our first ATR aircraft is likely to fly between Kolkata and Guwahati through Cooch Behar. In fact, the ATR aircraft could also operate from small airports like the one proposed in Malda," he added.
The chief minister had earlier said the government was planning to develop small airports in private-public-partnership. The army has already agreed to allow the use of Barrackpore and Kalyani airstrips for civil purposes. Zaveri indicated that the airline would go in for Boeing 737 for metro routes later.
