KMC Bungles Immersion Clean-Up

Idol immersion has left the Hooghly choking under alarming levels of pollution. Kolkata Municipal Corporation has failed to clear up the muck and debris. Even smaller municipalities, like Chinsurah, Chandernagore and Bansberia, have done a much better job of the post-bhasan clean up

Members of the Ganga Pollution Monitoring Committee (GPMC) will submit a detailed report to Calcutta High Court on their inspection of river banks. "We had appealed to the high court to issue the directive to keep the river clean during immersions. But the court's order was not observed. It is true that KMC has to dispose off several hundred more idols than its neighbouring civic bodies but the riverbanks on the Kolkata side have been terribly polluted because the high court's guidelines were not observed. We have taken photographs of the riverbanks and will submit them in court," said GPMC member and environment activist Subhas Datta.

He claimed that the ongoing row between KMC and Kolkata Port Trust over their jurisdictions along the riverbank has affected the clean-up work. KMC and KoPT have been blaming each other for the mess, each agency claiming that the worst polluted stretches are not under their supervision.

GPMC has proposed that an agency should conduct a survey to properly demarcate the jurisdiction of the KMC and KoPT so that it can fix responsibility on disposing solid waste dumped on the riverbanks throughout the year.

On its part, the committee will frame guidelines to keep the river clean all around the year. "We will prepare a guideline on how to dispose of solid waste and submit it to the court," Datta said.
