Govenment Plans Fire Fighting Training Institute At KalyaniBy siddharth22, Section News
The state government is mulling setting up an engineering college at Kalyani that will offer training exclusively on fire fighting techniques.
The project that has been visualised and readied by the state fire and emergency services department will require an initial investment of around Rs 150 crore for construction of the college on a 30 acres of land. The college, likely to be called the West Bengal Fire Engineering College, will help youngsters find jobs as fire engineers in the public and private sectors. The college is expected to attract students from the state as well as the from the northeastern states. "We intend to set up a college that will help students from the region in graduating with fire engineering degree. It can play the role of a major training centre on fire fighting in the region. The course will be a bachelor's degree in fire engineering and will be of three and a half year duration. Initially, around 50 seats will be made available for the course. Depending upon the response, the capacity will be raised to around 250 seats," said Pratim Chatterjee, state Minister for Fire and Emergency Services.
"We wish to approach the Jadavpur University for affiliation," Chatterjee said.
While the state government is supposed to fund the project, Chatterjee has also approached the Central government for availing any financial support, if possible. "I've had a discussion with the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, on the project. But things are at a preliminary stage," Chatterjee added.
