Railways Are Planning To Double The Speed Of All Express Trains Connecting Major Metro Cities

The Railways are planning to double the speed of all express trains connecting major metro cities. Whereas, passengers trains' average speed would be increased from 50 km/hr to 100 km/hr, freight trains would run at 60 km/hr from existing 30 km/hr.

"To start with, we plan to increase speed of trains which connect major metro cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai. Ramp-up of speed has to be done in phases. The speed would eventually be increased on others sectors also. We have to make huge investments in fencing the tracks so that speed does not compromise on security," a Rail Bhawan official said.

Japanese consultants would arrive next month to take up the project with the Railways. Apart from increased revenues from passenger service, the Railways would also gain from freight service. At present, speed of freight trains is very slow due to which the Railways loose traffic to other modes on some stretches.

It seems the Railways are going slow on high speed rail corridors. According to sources in the Rail Bhawan, high speed rail system would require an investment of Rs 40,000 crore per corridor. At present, it is a little tough to implement it due to paucity of funds.

"We require huge funds to support Rs 30,000 crore dedicated rail freight corridor project, which is our first priority. Therefore, the high speed rail project would be slow. But increasing the train speed is an option available with us," the official said.

Also, the Railways would not have to invest in track upgradation as much as it would have done on high-speed rail network. "To sustain 100 km/hr speed, fencing of the tracks would be enough. But to sustain highspeed trains running at an average speed of 250 km/hr, new tracks would have to be laid for special corridors," the official said.
