The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will demolish the shanties in Kacharipara and Hatgachia slum areas at Park Circus in ward number 58 to build highrise buildings there.
Around 6,480 dwelling units will be built to accommodate about 2,500 existing families, officials said.
The move promises to benefit the residents of the slum area. In the process, the civic body will also get a chance to retrieve a portion of its land.
"We hope to get back 15 acres from the bustee," said Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
"The Centre has already approved a sum of Rs 120.92 crore as against the demanded Rs 122 crore. We received the official letter of approval on October 20," the Mayor added.
The fund will be a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission project. The dwelling units will be complete with a bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen.
From proper sanitation to fresh drinking water, there is no basic amenity of any kind in the slum area now.
