The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus is gearing up for its student union polls on Monday as various student groups are busy withdrawing nominations after a series of general body meetings over the weekend.

"Till Monday evening, candidates can withdraw nominations. From Tuesday, they can begin campaigning," said Campus Election Commissioner Anjani Kumar.

While 417 nominations were filed for the four central panel posts of president, vice president, general secretary and joint secretary, the final list of candidates will be released on Tuesday.

Many student groups in the fray Left backed Student Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISF), Congress backed National Students' Union of India, BJP backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and independent Youth For Equality among others will start their campaign on Tuesday.

This year the focus would be on the controversial death of Rizwanur Rehman in Kolkata and its aftermath.

The case encompasses issues of class and religion, both of which are key issues in the polls.

The All India Students Association (AISA), affiliated with the radical CPI (ML) insists that the Rizwanur case is relevant to JNU because the university has like West Bengal consistently voted for a Left party for decades.

Sandeep Singh, AISA's presidential candidate this year, said his student group seeks a fair investigation into the case. "There are several matters of minority witch-hunting, which need to be discussed," he added.

Among other national issues like the agitation over SEZ in Nandigram, Indo-US nuclear deal and Patents Act, Singh said his party would also contesting the polls on issues related to campus.
