It's one Red bastion establishing links with another. West Bengal, India's Left fortress, is gearing up for direct flights to China, the world's largest communist citadel.

Come October 30, China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will start thrice-a-week direct service between Kolkata and Kunming, the capital of Yunan province in China's southern coast.

The airline, one of the largest Chinese carriers, flies to Delhi three times a week. It has a major hub in Kunming with connections to important Chinese cities throughout the day.

An airline official said the flights would take off from Kolkata in the early hours of Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flights, with Indian crew and serving Indian food, will touch down at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 11.40 pm and take off at 12.30 am to reach Kunming at 5.10 am local time.

Though the airline will begin service with a 50-seater Bombardiar Canadair Regional Jet, a larger aircraft would be considered once operations stabilised.

"The flight will help businessmen and tourists, reaching Kunming early in the morning, take connecting flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong," the official said. Interglobe will be the airline's sales agent in Kolkata.

At present, passengers take Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways to go to China. Both the carriers have acknowledged that China has emerged as a significant destination for outbound traffic from Kolkata in the past 18 months. Today, Singapore and Thai carry nearly 250-300 China bound passengers a week.
