Birla Recruiting Staff For Retail Stores In The State

Kumar Mangalam Birla's pan Indian retail chain More is recruiting in Kolkata, even as Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail, which failed in its retail plans due to political opposition, has started sending out its staff on deputation to other locations and companies.

Sources said a recruitment agency hired by the Aditya Vikram Birla Group has completed the first phase of interviews in the city. The group has shown interest in opening an outlet in the state. However, the spokesperson of the Mumbai-based AV Birla group declined to comment on the issue.

Kumar Mangalam's More plans to have 1,000 supermarkets in different states. It is already running 50,000 sq ft retail space that it has acquired by buying south based Trinethra Super Retail.

On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani is planning to shift out 800 workers recruited at the Reliance Retail outlets in the state.

"Some of them have already been sent to different states and some would shifted after the festive season is over," a company source said.

While the CPM is all for players like Reliance and others, some smaller allies in the Left Front like Forward Bloc had been opposing their entry.

After some outlets in the making were vandalised, Reliance stopped its rollout in the state and sacked at least 400 people. Mostly were floor assistants employed by different agencies.

Sources in the company said it is looking forward to the panchayat elections due in the state next May, after which they will take a final call on its venture in the state.
