Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will now have no excuse to offer if plastic accumulates at drainage pumping stations. For, automatic cleansing machines have been bought to check the accumulation of plastic and silt at the pumping stations.
A good number of pumps just would not function at some of the pumping stations during
the recent deluge. The civic authorities then decided to buy auto cleansing machines to prevent plastic and silt from choking the pumps used to drain out rainwater to outfall channels.
It has been decided that eight auto cleansing machines would be installed at three drainage pumping stations in the first phase. While four of these will be installed at Dhapa Lock drainage pumping station, the remaining four would be installed at Mominpur and Manicktala stations.
In the second phase, these machines would be placed at Palmerbazar, Topsia, Ballygunge, Kalighat and Ultadanga pumping stations. In the last phase, these sophisticated machines will be bought from Chennai and installed at 12 other smaller pumping stations. "Eight such machines have already arrived from Chennai and are ready to be installed," a KMC drainage department official said on Monday.
