Durga Puja Mandals Get Show Cause For Irregularities

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and traffic police have separately issued notices to 16 Durga puja mandals in the city for alleged irregularities.

According to a deputy municipal commissioner (DMC), some 124 mandals were issued permission for the puja.

The 16 mandals, which have been served notices by the TMC, are from the Uthalsar, Naupda and Vartak Nagar ward committees, he said.

"Of these, we found that there were irregularities in nine mandals. These irregularities ranged from various issues like lack of necessary permission, encroachment on roads and so on," he said, "We have issued them show cause notices and have asked them to rectify the irregularities."

Other mandals had not taken necessary permission for construction of pandals or had failed to procure the no objection certificate from traffic police and local police stations, he said, adding that a showcause notice has been issued to them and they have been asked to furnish the details to the TMC.

"If they have applied for permission, and if the TMC did not grant them it could be because they don't have other mandatory clearances from the traffic police or the local police. They have to get the clearance or else, we have to register a criminal cases against them," he said.

The general body meeting of the TMC had passed a resolution stating the necessary guidelines like not blocking the traffic and taking permission from police and the corporation, need to be taken by the mandals. Mandals failing to follow these guidelines would see criminal charges against them, it stated.

The traffic police have also separately issued notices to 29 Durga puja mandals for blocking traffic.

"Some guidelines need to be followed. One just cannot block the road which ultimately leads to traffic congestion," said DCP (Traffic) Dyaneshwar Chavan, adding, "If they do not make changes in their structure we have to take strict action against the errant mandals."
