With the Tata Motors' Rs 1 lakh car project and its adjoining vendor park gradually taking shape at Singur, the West Bengal government has now decided to set up an auto components hub at Guptamoni in West Midnapore district. This was announced by the state commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen in Kolkata on Tuesday.
Mr Sen was speaking at an interactive session with a 16 member German delegation from the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). He said that the auto components hub would come up on 500 acres at Guptamoni.
When contacted, the state commerce and industries secretary Sabyasachi Sen told ET: "We had initially decided to set up an SEZ at Guptamoni. But, we changed our mind later. We have now taken the decision to set up an auto component hub there."
The industries secretary said that identification of land for the project has already begun. "We will start the process of land purchase by the end of this year. Right now, it is not possible for us to indicate the amount of investments that is expected in the auto component hub. But, we feel that once the Tata Motors project rolls out, this part of the country will attract more investments in the auto sector." Bengal Srei Infrastructure Development, a joint venture company between Srei Capital Markets and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), will develop the infrastructure required for the auto components hub.
Earlier, the industries minister said that the state was receiving huge investments in the iron and steel sector, pegged at Rs 90,000 crore. He also informed the German delegation that the state government has submitted a proposal to the central government for setting up a chemical hub at Nayachar in East Midnapore district.
