200 Yrs Of Puja Tradition,Janbazar Bardhanbari Has Stuck To Its Heritage & RitualsBy parul118, Section Durga Puja
The Durga Puja at Bardhanbari in Janbazar of central Kolkata has stepped into its 200th year with aplomb. Started by Gurudas Bardhan, an eminent zamindar of the area way back in 1807, this bonedi barir pujo attracts a huge crowd. In an age when the younger generation is losing interest in following rituals and maintain traditions, the Bardhan family has made a difference.
A contemporary of the puja of Rani Rashmoni, the Bardhan family members have still managed to retain their heritage and rituals. Kumari Puja is an integral part of the family tradition. Any girl within the age of 13 years is chosen to be worshipped by the purohits on Navami. However, they have to attain an uneven age, which means five, seven, nine, 11 or 13 years. "The girls are chosen either from our family or are selected from the family of purohits," says Chiranjeeb Bardhan, a member of the family. The puja begins on Sasthi through `Bel-baran' of the goddess. The wife of lord Ganesha (Kola-bou) is taken to the bathing ghats only by the men of the family. During Sandhi Puja, sacrifice of vegetables, including cucumbers and sugarcane, is made. "We are followers of Vaishnavism. Thus, no animal sacrifice can be a part of our rituals," he added.
Navami is a day of fun and frolic for the younger members of the family. A cultural evening is organised by the family members to stage theatre, perform and hold a musical extravaganza. "Though there is no rule regarding dhunuchi dance in the family, to attract the younger children, a dhunuchi performance is also held," explains Bardhan.
Dashami ends with sindur khela, which has become a ritual that attracts women from across the area. One unique ritual in the Bardhan family is that on Dashami, the idol is sent for immersion to the Ganges on a bamboo structure carried by 21 workers. The `Debottar' property has not been handed over to Kolkata Municipal Corporation. "During the five days of Durga Puja, tradition is maintained. Even the youngest member of the family is made to play a role. The house was renovated and the thakurdalan was redone with tiles," Bardhan said. Source:The Times Of india,17-10-07
