Jadavpur University is all set to embark on a new venture. Its department of architecture and School of Water Resources Engineering have been assigned the task of designing the landscape for South City Projects on Prince Anwar Shah Road.

South City, coming up on 31.14 acres, has four residential towers comprising 1,600 flats. Suchandra Bhadra, JU's landscape architect, has made elaborate plans to design the landscape for the plush residential complex. "We will design the landscape and do rainwater harvesting, too. It will include landscaping irrigation and also provide water to the vast landscape spread across six acres," she said. A comprehensive water management strategy will also have to be implemented, added Bhadra.

Environment vegetation, including trees, grass and plants, will extend to more than 70% of the area under green cover. House plants as well as greenhouse plants will be there, too.

To avoid snakes, pebbles and grapples will be laid across the huge campus. In addition, JU will also create space for children's playgrounds, pocket gardens and pedestrian plaza. Also, natural waterbodies, spread across 0.45 acre, will be there. Landscaping would also include fountains, cascades and a fog-like atmosphere, created by automated periodic fumes (water vapour) near the swimming pool to act as a coolant and a curtain to obstruct the view for the benefit of swimmers.

JU has also landscaped the 150 acre Merlin Greens, comprising 250 bungalows.
