Here is some good news for the Puja organisers and the millions of Kolkatans who prayed on Sunday night to make the rains go away at least till Sunday. Met officials said on Monday that the low pressure was gradually moving away towards Bangladesh.

On Saturday, a low pressure was developing over the coast of West Bengal and Orissa. As a result, Gangetic West Bengal and its adjoining areas received scattered heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours.

On Monday evening, the low pressure was said to be moving towards a north and north-west direction. It is likely to shift away from Kolkata and move towards Bangladesh. However, in the next 12 hours, there will be heavy rain over wide areas of Gangetic West Bengal. Gradually, the intensity will decrease and people are likely to enjoy a dry Durga Puja.

Last minute shoppers were affected badly with heavy showers at several places. Some areas, like Behala and Gariahat, had waterlogged streets for quite a few hours on Sunday. "We were expecting the Puja bazar to draw major crowds now. But, due to the sudden spells of rain, the sale had not met the expectations till evening," said Ganesh
Chakraborty, a garment seller at Gariahat Mall.

On Monday, the maximum temperature was 28.5, which was three degrees below normal. Rainfall recorded was 5.5 mm.

The Alipore weathermen assures, "we hope no more low pressures or depressions can spoil the mood set perfectly for the Pujas. The present one is showing signs of moving away from the state."
