Book Fair Hold on Maidan This Year Too

Kolkata Book Fair has courted the courts again. The issue of venue has come to the fore this year, too, after the Publishers and Book Sellers Guild decided to move court with a writ petition seeking direction that the state government, Army, West Bengal Pollution Control Board and other concerned authorities allow them to hold the 32nd edition of the fair on Maidan. The book fair is scheduled for January 31 to February 11.

Last year the Army had permitted the Guild to hold the fair on Maidan for the last time.

Interestingly, there's division within CPI(M), too, regarding the book fair venue. While Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is sticking to his stand that the fair should be held at the heart of the city on Maidan, party's state secretary Biman Bose is reconciled to the fact that Vidyasagar Mela the 13th edition of the fair was shifted from Maidan for the first time is better off on the permanent fairground at EM Bypass.

According to Prabir Goswami, office secretary of the Vidyasagar Mela Committee, the ground is not as disadvantageous as the Guild touts it to be. The fair, he said, got a space of 1.2 lakh square feet at the EM Bypass site the same as it used to get on Maidan. He said the footfall wasn't bad either: 1.5 lakh visitors daily, compared to 2 lakh daily visitors to the Maidan fair last year.

"We are happy shifting the fair (to EM Bypass) because the court order says so," Goswami said. "We do not want to go into any confrontation. There are some disadvantages, like communication, but those will certainly improve with time.

"This place is also good Chowringhee is any day a better area (as venue) but this place also has the potential to become a major draw."

But the Guild is adamant about not shifting the book fair from Maidan. The Guild's secretary, Tridib Kumar Chatterjee, said: "The book fair is held on a large scale on Maidan, occupying 28 acres of land. It is not possible to hold such a massive fair in the space available at the new fairground. We cannot reduce the book fair's scale by cutting down on the food court and other peripheral presentations because all these are needed for the benefit of the visitors."

Kolkata Book Fair, he stressed, "is of international standards", and should continue to be held on the Maidan.

Chatterjee also brushed aside allegations that organising the fair on Maidan hurts the city's lungs. "We do not think there is any kind of environmental pollution," he said. "We take steps to rejuvenate Maidan after the fair every year. We are going to have the fair on Maidan this year; nothing can stop us.

"Other fairs can be held in the new ground because they are (relatively) small-scale affairs."

The Army, which earlier contended that the fair be shifted from Maidan due to security reasons, now seems reconciled to the issue. "We will allow them to hold the fair on Maidan if the court gives the nod. We have no other issues," Wing Commander R K Das said. "Regarding environmental problems, we will ensure that they take care of Maidan and replenish it with grass once the fair is over."
