Private Firms To Chip In With Rs 20 Crore For Development ProjectsBy sachiv1, Section Development
State urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya saw for himself the mess Sector V was in during his early morning excursion on Friday. Broken roads and pavements, illegal parking, water flowing from sewerlines and more. And, he made his intention loud and clear. Development of Sector V at any cost.
To begin with, an escrow account will be opened for the Tech Town's development projects with a sum of Rs 20 crore contributed by private companies like the Tatas. "When we started here, Sector V only comprised smallscale industries. The master plan created then did not address the need of this colossal IT hub. We have, therefore, decided to draw up a new master plan," said the minister.
Bhattacharya was dismayed by the sight of buses parked illegally and mounds of garbage all over. He spotted roads sans pavements and illegal hutments that have mushroomed behind skyscrapers. "We need at least three bus terminals to begin with," the minister told officials accompanying him. He came down heavily on the IT companies for flouting rules and dumping garbage around Tech Town. The 10-car convoy, followed by media vehicles, surprised everyone at Sector V.
This is the minister's first visit to Sector V after Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority took over the management of the IT hub. Accompanying him, were Nita chairman S A Ahmed, chief executive officer Anup Motilal, Kolkata Metropolitian Development Authority CEO P R Baviskar, Salt Lake subdivisional officer Tapas Chowdhury and a senior urban development official. Sewerage clearance and supply of filtered water are priorities in Sector V where several development projects are in the pipeline. But the minister also took a close look at waterbodies between Nalban and Sector V as he has planned a food court at the boating complex. "Beautification projects will take place alongside development projects," said Bhattacharya, referring to the boulevards planned for the area. "But first, we need a water reservoir for 3 million gallons of filtered water we get from Palta." (Source-Times Of India,06/01/07)
