The CPI-(M) on Thursday demanded amendments to laws relating to special economic zones (SEZs) and land acquisition for industrial projects.
Party general secretary Prakash Karat, in a media briefing after the politburo and central committee meetings, said changes were required in the laws.
Giving full credit to the Bengal government's land use policy, Karat said that this should become the basis for the use of land for industrial and development projects. "If there is any defect or anomaly, the government is prepared to discuss it. But the Singur project is good for the industrial development of West Bengal," he said.
Karat, however, parried questions on whether the Bengal government would give equity stakes to displaced farmers in the companies floated in the SEZs in the state. This suggestion had been made by the CPI-M, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc in a note submitted on October 19 last year.
Commenting on the mob violence in Nandigram, Karat said that the state government would not go ahead with the Nandigram project till the issue was discussed in detail in the Left Front.
