The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006 got the President's assent on Thursday, almost a fortnight after both Houses of the Parliament passed it unanimously. The Bill, which now becomes a law, will ensure reservation in admission of the students belonging to SCs, STs and OBCs to centrally-aided higher educational institutions. The law now paves the way to start implementing the policy of reservations from the academic session of 2007-8. However, it will not apply to institutions established in the tribal areas referred to in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, research institutions, minority educational institutions and superspecialised disciplines.
