New Look For Kolkata MetroBy Dr arvind, Section Kolkata Metro
Bored with the old coaches of metro? The New Year has some good news for the passengers. After 22 years of introducing its service on October 24, 1984, the Metro Railway is going to introduce seven new rakes to ply the stretch from Dum Dum to Garia.
The rakes, with the same six motor coaches and two trailor coaches, will have advanced features -- audio-visual screen inside the coaches, fire detection equipment and better ventilation. G K Mohanty, chief operations manager of Metro Railways, said: What Is New?
"Once the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, finalises the tender, the manufacturing of the coaches will commence. We have set an internal date of December 2007 to introduce the new seven rakes which will join the existing 18 rakes in the service. Work is going in the Tollygunge to Garia stretch and it should be completed by the end of this year." Click on "Full Story" for more...
The new Tollygunge to Garia extension project was sanctioned in 2000 and the total budget for the project is earmarked at Rs 907 crore. The state government is financing one-third of the project. The investment in introducing the new rakes will be Rs 196 crore. There is no immediate plan to replace all the old coaches because according to Mohanty, the old ones are doing fine. Moreover, replacing the old coaches totally would need a mammoth investment.
Ved Pal, chief electrical engineer, Metro Railways, said the new coaches will be of the same dimension as the old ones but will have certain added features. "The new coaches will be have a broad gauge base and metre gauge shell which is same as that of the old coaches. But we have told ICF to include some special features in the new rakes," said Pal. "The new coaches will have many features to match international stan dards. In fact all the new features are going to be added keeping in mind the security and safety of the passengers," Pal added.
