The Left Front government is committed to industrialisation while maintaining a steady balance between newly emerging sectors and traditional ones such as agriculture.

This was announced by state minister for commerce and industries Nirupam Sen. He was addressing a gathering of Indian industrialists and delegates from abroad at the valedictory function of the 20th Industrial India Trade Fair.

“If we cannot avail of the (prevailing) opportunities, history will not forgive us,” Sen said.

“We are resolute in our determination to pursue the policies that we have been implementing for more than three decades on the basis of our policy resolution on industry crafted in 1994,” Sen said, adding that the Left Front government will keep its promise of meeting the people’s aspirations.

The minister said that considering the current scenario, the state should try its best to grab the new opportunities for overall growth and that the government’s policies in this regard have already yielded results: “The annual growth rate in the state is 7.22 per cent. This is one of the highest in the country,” he said.

Sen said that significant achievements have been made in the agricultural sector and now the state is concentrating its energies on emerging sectors such as automobiles, petrochemicals, fruit technology, knowledge- based industry, bio-technology. “Simultaneously, our aim is to bring about a proper balance between the traditional sectors and the sunrise sector,” the minister said.

Expressing concern over the opposition to industrialisation without naming the Trinamool Congress, Sen said: “It is sad that in several quarters an apprehension is being expressed that our government has been relegating the interests of the farmers to the background in its stride towards faster industrial growth,” Sen said. However, the Left Front government has not shut its doors for discussion.

“We believe in inclusive democracy where dialogue, debate and suggestions are integral components...we want to resolve the differences in perception and approach to development in the present scenario through discussion,” Sen added.
