Book Fair to be Held at Salt Lake Stadium

The Publishers and Booksellers Guild on Wednesday decided the 32nd Kolkata Book Fair will be held at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan from February 10 to February 21. The decision was taken in a final meeting that lasted two hours.

Ground convenor of the Guild, Sudhangshu Dey, said: "The Salt Lake Stadium or the Yuva Bharati Krirangan is the final venue of the Book Fair. The area here is smaller than that of the Maidan and not so well connected. But we decided the fair should certainly be held since it is an international event and city residents feel strongly about it."

Guild members spent the day debating with government officials on the venue. Two locations were shortlisted -- the peripheral premises of the Salt Lake Stadium and the Central Park in Salt Lake. The Guild emphasised on the stadium where the 20th Industrial India Trade Fair is on at present.

Earlier in the day, chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb had assured the media, "We are trying our best to see that the Book Fair be definitely held, albeit at a different location."

A senior official in the chief minister's secretariat said people will face problems while commuting to the stadium. The Guild will also have to take care that the fair does not spill over to the main playing area. "The state government will run more buses for the fair," he said.

The official also said the Guild did not want the Central Park because it is in a residential locality. The space available in Central Park is also much less.
