A convention was held at the Bhupesh Bhavan, the CPI state office, today where CPI state secretary Manjukumar Majumdar met various students and members of the West Bengal Primary Teachers Training Institute to come together and decide on the demands to solve the stalemate that has arisen for the Primary Teacher Training Institutes (PTTI) not affiliated under the NCTE. Of the 138 teacher training colleges in the state 122 of them are not affiliated under the NCTE.

"More than 75,000 students are waiting to get their certificates and around 16,000 students are not being able to sit for their final examinations because they are not affiliated under the NCTE. The examination was supposed to be held on June 16 last year but till now we have heard nothing of it. The fates of so many students hangs in the balance," said Pintu Parui, general secretary of the PTTI students union.

Parui also said that earlier the state government disbursed a grant of Rs 12 crore to solve the problem of the B.Ed and the B.PEd colleges but nothing is being done to solve the problem of the PTTI not under the NCTE.

The demands placed by the students and the members of the PTTI is that the 16,000 students be allowed to sit for their examinations after being passed under the NCTE.

The certificates be discharged immediately and students passing out of the PTTI be also considered under the system of appointment of primary teachers in West Bengal.

"We have decided that if our demands are not met with then we are going to gherao Primary Education Head office at Salt Lake on February 1 and arrange for a sit-in demonstration and not allow them to work," said Parui.
