February Date for Health City PlotBy sachiv1, Section Health
The health city in Burdwan should not remain a distant dream for much longer. Billed as a facility of international standards, work on the Rs 800-crore project will begin next month. Bengal-CES, a joint venture between West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation and Consulting Engineering Services, a Delhi-based consultancy firm, bagged the contract for the project.
CES managing director S S Chakraborty said, "It will be the country's first self-contained health city and built on the private-public partnership model. It would provide people of all income groups affordable, modern healthcare. It will also have shopping centres and multiplexes -- all of them in a green ambiance. The city would also promote international health tourism." The 60-acre health city would be located on the fringes of Burdwan town, where Durgapur Expressway and NH-2 meet. "It will be less than an hour's commute from Kolkata after the second Vivekananda Setu is thrown open. It will have a direct link to NSC Bose International Airport. Burdwan was chosen as the site as it already has quality medical services," Chakraborty said. The phased project would come up over five years. "An investment of Rs 100 crore would be needed for the first phase of work," said Chakraborty. The health city will have a 500-bed anchor hospital, superspeciality hospitals with units for cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery, a mother and child care hospital for the poor and a rehabilitation centre for patients with chronic ailments.
"Franchise agreements have worked out with eminent doctors and hospitals of international repute," said an official.
"An insurance coupon facility would be extended to the poor. Under this, 50% of a patient's expenses would be borne by a city insurance company," he said. Besides, the health city would have a modern medical college with 100 seats, a nursing college and an advanced dental college. "A pharma park with adequate facilities for storage and distribution of medicines, a vaccine warehouse and a telemedicine centre would come up on the premises," the official said.
There are plans to set up a blood bank, a diagnostic centre with collection centres for different regions, accommodation facilities for doctors, nurses and patients' relatives and a centre for medical research and development work with facilities for clinical trials of drugs.
