No Book Fair on Jan 31, Even With Court Nod

It's final. Kolkata Book Fair '07 will not begin on January 31 even if Calcutta High Court allows it to be held on the Maidan.

The Publishers & Booksellers Guild has deferred all its programmes till February 10 and informed foreign dignitaries not to come to the city to participate in the fair.

This also means that Kolkata Book Fair will now be knocked off the International Book Fair schedule and will have to lobby afresh for inclusion next year.

"Even if Calcutta High Court on Monday permits us to hold the fair on the Maidan, we will not be able to hold the fair as per schedule. We have already intimated this to our members," said Badal Bose of Ananda Publishers.

Bose, among the seniormost officials of the guild, said on Saturday that the guild had asked foreign publishers and officials of participating countries to keep a watch on the situation. "As soon as we get the court's final verdict, we will decide what to do next," he said.

Guild former general secretary Anil Acharya said all decisions and strategies will be finalised after the court's final judgment on Monday.

Even CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee seemed resigned to the situation. Quizzed at a function on Saturday, he said, "Nothing is in our hands and the court's decision is final."

The city's environmentalists on Saturday condemned transport minister Subhas Chakraborty's remarks against them. Chakraborty had threatened to "gherao their (environmentalists') houses by party cadres for scuttling the book fair, which is a part and parcel of the city's heritage". The green brigade, under the banner Kolkata Green Network, said: "The remark of the transport minister is very unfortunate. We never opposed the book fair. But we want to have an eco-friendly fair. The case is pending in the court because of administrative fault."
