Bengal May Soon Get Women Fire Fighters

State Govt plans to score a first by providing 5% quota for women in fire services department

The West Bengal government is going to achieve a first in the country, as decks have been cleared for providing five per cent reservation for women in the Fire Services Department. No other department in the State Government provides any reservation for women. Moreover, no other State in the country has women personnel in its fleet of fire fighters’.

In the first batch, 50 women fire fighters are slated to be recruited in a couple of months.

Although the proposal was sent earlier, the Law Department had put up a stumbling block. According to officials of the department, the Law Department raised objections citing constitutional provisions.

“They cited those provisions of the Constitution which state that no discrimination can be made on the basis of caste, creed or sex. But we explained that what we are going to do is ‘positive discrimanation’ which will be beneficial for women,’’ said K S Katiresan, principal secretary, Fire Services Department.

The Law Department then forwarded the proposal to the Legal Remembrance. “We are confident of getting it done, and we hope the government order will be released soon,’’ said Katiresan.

“This is going to be a novel thing as no other government department has reservation for women. I appreciate this a lot,’’ said S N Haque, principal secretary, Department of Child and Women Development.

The government is reported to have felt the need of raising a fleet of women fire fighters when the force faced difficult situations in areas dominated by orthodox people, particularly the minority community. In some cases, there were casualties among women folk as male fire fighters were not allowed to enter the houses.
